Spanish Digital Nomad Visa FAQs

  • The digital nomad visa is open to citizens of non-EU, non-EEA, and non-Swiss countries who wish to become residents in Spain while working remotely for a non-Spanish employer or as self-employed individuals using computer technology and telecommunication systems for their work.

If the applicant is self-employed, they can also engage in work for a Spanish company, as long as it does not exceed 20% of their total professional activity.

To be eligible, the applicant must have either an undergraduate or postgraduate degree from a reputable university, college, or business school, or possess a minimum of 3 years of work experience in their current field.

Individuals must also demonstrate sufficient earnings to support themselves. This requires meeting the income threshold of 200% of the country's monthly minimum wage, which can be substantiated with bank statements, contracts, and invoices. Presently, the threshold stands at €2,334 per month or €28,000 per year, though it may undergo a slight increase as the minimum wage is being reevaluated in the country.

Applicants must provide evidence of a clean criminal record in both Spain and their country of residence for the previous five years. This includes a clear two-year criminal record certificate and a sworn statement confirming no criminal history within the last five years.

Proof of social security coverage from the applicant's country of origin is also necessary. In cases where the country of application lacks a social security agreement with Spain, the employing company must obtain a contribution code and commence payment for the employee's social security coverage.

  • To obtain the digital nomad visa in Spain, you need to meet certain requirements. Here are the key criteria:

    1. Remote Work: The visa is specifically for individuals engaged in remote work for non-Spanish companies. It is important to demonstrate that your work can be done remotely using computer telematics and telecommunication media.

    2. Health Insurance: Applicants are typically required to provide proof of health insurance coverage. This can be in the form of a certificate that verifies public or private health insurance contracted with an authorized insurance entity in Spain. The insurance policy should cover all the risks insured by Spain's public health system

    3. Sufficient Income: Applicants need to prove that they earn enough money to be self-sufficient. The income threshold is set at 200% of the country's monthly minimum wage, which is currently €2,334 per month or €28,000 per year.

    4. Qualifications or Experience: While not always mandatory, applicants are often expected to demonstrate their qualifications or experience in their field. This can be accomplished by providing evidence of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree from a reputable university, college, or business school. Alternatively, having at least three years of work experience in the applicant's current field of activity can serve as a substitute for formal qualifications

    5. Clean Criminal Record: It is required to have a clear criminal record in Spain and in the country of residence for the previous five years. This entails providing a two-year criminal record certificate and a sworn statement confirming no criminal record within the last five years.

    6. Social Security Coverage: Proof of social security coverage from the applicant's country of origin is necessary. If there is no social security agreement between the applicant's country and Spain, the employing company must obtain a contribution code and commence payment for the employee's social security coverage.

These requirements are subject to change, so it is recommended to consult official sources or the Spanish consulate/embassy for the most up-to-date information before applying for a digital nomad visa in Spain.

  • Digital nomad visas in Spain are initially issued with a validity of 12 months or for the duration of the employment period if it is shorter. Once in Spain, applicants have the opportunity to apply for a three-year residency permit, which can be extended for an additional two years, allowing for a maximum total stay of five years.

It is important to note that to maintain the visa, individuals should not be absent from the country for more than six months per year. Additionally, remote workers have the option to apply for a residency card, enabling them to travel freely within the European Union while residing in Spain.

  • Close family members, such as children and spouses, have the opportunity to accompany the visa holder to Spain by providing evidence of adequate financial resources. For family units comprising two individuals, including the visa holder, an additional 75% of the country's monthly minimum wage (€875/month) is required. Furthermore, an extra 25% (€292) is added for each additional family member.

If your spouse or civil partner is included in your application, they are granted the right to reside and work in Spain as well.
